It was Christmas
It's hard to believe it's been nearly 18 years since George released his Christmas album, It's Christmas! Vol. One. The festive disc, which he co-created with Jason Piccioni, was a labor of love that showcased his passion for music and his desire to spread some holiday cheer.
As he reflect on the album's creation, he was reminded of the excitement and enthusiasm that went into making it. He was eager to share his unique blend of jazz, funk, and reggae styles with the world, and, he says, "I think that energy comes through in the music."
"While I've had the opportunity to look back on my musical endeavors with hindsight, I'm still proud of the work I put into It's Christmas! Vol. One," George shares. "It may not be my most polished or refined effort, but it's a product of its time and a reflection of my early trials and errors."
And for those who sometimes ask - no! it's not a joke! Explains George: "It was early days in my synth programming career, I was fighting crashing plugins all the time - maybe I shouldn't have pirated them! - and we wanted it to sound a bit lo-fi and cheesy."
Sometimes cheesy works. The most popular track, We Wish You A Reggae Christmas, acquits itself well enough, clothing the festive standard in a marimba-like lead against a simple one-drop signature. George pulls a face: "Maybe it was a bit racist, looking back, two white guys playing that!"
Other tracks, like the notoriously chaotic Xmas Funk, feel unfinished. Dare we even say more musak than music? Laughs George, "I was concentrating so hard on the programming, I forgot to play a tune!"
Taking the ribbing with good grace, Muranyi explains in the years since its release, he's had the chance to re-examine his musical tastes and preferences. It was something of a cash grab, although not a cynical one. "Everyone who wants to make a bit of easy money makes a Christmas album. This one didn't pay off. But the music remains."
And while some may never grow accustomed to the quirks and charms of the album, which is still available on Spotify, George enjoys listening to it every year. Maybe you will too...
