Out of everyone's hair
Formed by Simon Eugene, George's keys provided a simple, brit-pop feeling for Out Of My Hair's mid-90's retro-psychedelic sound.
Although they gained some interest in Japan, Out Of My Hair's popularity in the UK remained elusive. This didn't deter George from embracing his role within the band; instead, he reveled in touring alongside more successful artists like Crash Test Dummies and Barenaked Ladies. "It was a great experience, meeting so many musicians more talented than me," George recalls fondly. "I tried to learn from them."
Simon Eugene's recent revival of the Out Of My Hair name caught George off guard, but he chose not to harbor any bitterness. "I'm always happy to see old friends picking up where they left off," George says with a warm smile. Did Eugene get in touch for George's blessing, or a collaboration? George just smiles...
But with little success, and tensions rising, the band ultimately parted ways, according to the official story due to "artistic differences." George remains neutral about any gossip surrounding Out Of My Hair's tumultuous history, or unfounded stories about him. Is not even embittered about any lack of mention in Eugene's (now deleted) history of the band?
"Let's not dwell on the past," George says dismissively. "I've been fortunate enough to have had a diverse musical career, and I'm not going to let rumors or speculation dictate my narrative." He pauses for a moment before adding, "Besides, I like to remember the good stuff."
As George reflects on his time in Out Of My Hair, he can't help but chuckle at the memories. His most cherished moments, though, are tied to his work as a synth programmer – an art form that helped shape his future musical endeavors.
When asked if he'd like to revisit any of Out Of My Hair's classic compositions, George reveals that his own tastes have matured over the years. "I've come to appreciate a more refined sound," he admits. "I'm still a musician but I'll never be a star. These days I focus on teaching and mentoring. They say those who can't do, teach. I prefer to say those who once did, teach."
Out Of My Hair may still have something to teach us all. Tracks are available on Spotify. Listen out for George's youthful sound.
